BHAGAVAD GITA CHAPTER 5

KARMA SAMYAAS YOG (THE YOGA OF THE RENUNCIATION OF KARMAS)

The chapter 5 study classes will cover:

  • An intensive and in-depth study of the nature and psychology of the mind.

  • Practicing what one preaches after understanding how the mind works. The meaning of the word Acharya. An explanation of the word acharan (conduct) and a study of ShreeRam, Sitaji and Lakshmanji in the Ramayan.

  • A study of the Panchatantra that teaches us about deep secrets of human psychology.

  • Four steps to become a master of your own Self: controlling the body, mind and intellect with the soul. A study of the word jitendriya (one who has won over his senses), as defined in the Manusmriti.

  • How true celibacy is not in outer conduct but when one controls their intellect. A study of Lakshmanji (a celibate even though he was married) from the Ramayan.

  • A story from the Shrimad Bhagavad of how to let the senses perform their functions without any attractions or repulsions being created as a result of this.

  • A study of the samskar in Indian culture where we remember God at 16 major moments in our lives so that attachment is not created.

  • A study of four different types of fruits of karmas: drashta, adrastha, praapta and apraapta and their link with time.

  • The relationship between God and the world: the nimitakāran (the creator) and the upādānkāran (the substance).

  • The difference between rituals, religion, God, philosophy and spirituality.

  • A story from the life of Ishvar Chandra Vidyāsāgar who has done a lot for womens’ rights in Bengal.

  • The secret to power and confidence. Why Swami Ramdas, Guru of King Shivaji, put the word Samarth (powerful) before His name.

  • How to build your willpower, courage and determination.

  • Samadrashti (seeing everyone and everything with an equal eye). A study of Narsihn Mehta’s Divine poems such as Vaishnav Janto and Akhil Brahmand.

  • A study of the Katho Upanishad. We only see pratyaksha (that which is in front of our eyes) and we do not see apratyaksha (that which is not in front of our eyes). We do not see the abstract inside the concrete because our perception is limited to sensual perception.

  • A study of Shrimad Adi Shankracharya’s Tattvo Upadesh. Why ShreeKrushna uses the word samadarshi (seeing everyone equally) and not the word samavartina (behaving with everyone equally). Why behaviour towards others can never be the same.

  • How a Brahmin only becomes complete when there is courtesy together with knowledge. Knowledge is a very dangerous thing because no other possessions lead to as much egotism as does knowledge. That is why courtesy is needed with it.

  • The states of sachchitānanda (existence-wisdom-bliss) and Brāhmistiti (the state of Brahman).

  • A study of the Vishnu Purana about how sorrows appear like pleasures to the senses.

  • A study of the Astavakra Gita about how the enjoyment that one gets from material pleasures leaves an imprint on one’s mind, which causes problems when we are not enjoying that material pleasure or when the enjoyment out of that material pleasure goes away.

  • How to be free from desires and anger. Why animals still fight for territory, whereas humans, who used to fight for territory, now allow one another to go to each other’s countries with the issue of a visa.

  • How the psychologist Frank Wu linked anger to desire. Why there can be no anger without desire.

  • A study of the word Rishi, a revolutionary. Why Rishis live a worldly life. Examples of Rishis who were married such as Atri, Vaishista and Vyāsji.

  • The power of silence. How maintaining silence builds great power within you and why we should never waste words.

  • How one’s power increases by making the vision still between the eyebrows.
